MLB Must Implement Tech Swiftly To Seize The Sport’s Momentum – Ryan O’Hea

Baseball has had a long standing problem of attracting an older audience and losing out on younger viewers. Reasons for this include the game being too long and players taking too much time between pitches, in a society where everyone is looking for instant gratification, constantly waiting for a player to hurl a ball or smack a home run with little action in between doesn’t exactly fit the ideal mold of instant satisfaction. Realizing this as a serious problem baseball has decided to do two things, the first being make light of the situation and create some comedic relief and the second is installing new technologies that will speed up the game and make it more interesting. With so many young stars in the game baseball decided to use these players in a video that included old technology from past decades and utilizing the quote “Warning: You’re about to feel really, really old.” this directly appeals to the both the older and younger viewers but in different ways. The older views can relate to using that technology from years ago while the younger viewers understand how the young players feel as they have no idea what this technology is either. In addition, new Statcast technologies have been implemented to give the game a new boost. Included in these technologies are game clocks which keep the pitcher on a time limit between each pitch, also viewers at home are able to see the exit velocity of balls that are hit as well as how fast a player is running or how fast their throw is coming in from the outfield. Baseball recognizes that there is a problem and slowly but surely they are adapting to the 21st century.
