Baseball season is almost upon us, but the Boston Red Sox are getting a head start on the social media race. For spring training, the Red Sox are using Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to inform fans. They are using these platforms to give fans exactly what they want: quotes directly from players and management, behind-the-scenes videos of players, and even candid looks at the team, such as when Joe Kelly, Hanley Ramirez, and Pablo Sandoval posed to show off their big bellies after Kung Fu Panda was called out by the media for being overweight. The Red Sox have been known to play on social media in the past, such as in 2013 when Jonny Gomes and Mike Napoli started the team-wide beard growing, the Red Sox offered the hashtag Get Beard. Boston is a baseball city where players let their freak flag fly (just ask Manny, Damon, or Youk) and it looks like this year’s team is already using social media to show off their zaniness.
