The NFL teamed up with Zebra Technologies in last Sunday’s Super Bowl to pave the way for the future of football. Zebra Technologies developed a small radio frequency identification (RFID) tracking device that is placed under players’ shoulder pads. Sensors were placed in the stadium above the 150 feet above field to gather and transmit the data to the broadcast booth and video boards. This technology can provide real-time information such as speed, distance traveled, and acceleration of players. Heart rate is also monitored with the RFIDs during practice. I chose this article because it represents the movement towards using technology to increase athlete and team performance. Wearable technology is becoming more and more popular, and can be especially advantageous in sport. This sort of technology could reduce injuries and allow for more accurate decision making on the field. Time will only tell just how influential wearable technology will be in the world of sports.
