In association with Verizon, the organizing committee and the NFL have agreed to team up to help recycle electronic waste, safely. This is an effort to remove of this electronic devices that are older from the area so that they do not negatively impact the region in landfills. This may not seem like a traditional “digital media” type post, but I find it vital because of the impact that being a green event has on the social context of the event, which is played out heavily in today’s social media and “new media” landscape. New media is used most heavily by those that are impacted by social decisions made by companies and organizations, primarily including the current and younger generations. The digital media conversation that will come of a green friendly Superbowl is what makes this decision important and notable.
